Hidden Glasgow presents: St Mungo's Museum of Religious Life and Art!

We've got a lovely recommendation for you today! We're featuring St Mungo's Museum of Religion and Art, giving you a moment of tranquillity amongst the bustling city!

About St Mungo's Museum:

St Mungo's is named after the patron saint of Glasgow, who brought the Christian faith to Glasgow in the 6th century. The museum was constructed in 1989, on the site of the old Bishop's Castle, and was opened to the public in 1993. The museum aims to promote understanding and respect between people of all faiths, and hosts displays and art showing the importance of religion in people's lives across the world. After being closed due to the pandemic, the museum is now back open for all to see.

How St Mungo's Museum hidden?

St Mungo's is ideally located by the Provand's Lordship and Glasgow Cathedral, a short 10 minute walk from the city centre, or alternatively, the closest train stop is High Street station.
As the museum is close to the Cathedral buildings, many people tend to overlook this gorgeous wee spot as part of the Cathedral when in fact, it's a whole new attraction!

Why should I go to St Mungo's Museum?

The museum has some great features, including the first Zen Garden in the UK and regular informative events. Coming up on October 30th is a talk with Robert McNeil MBE of Remembering Srebrenica, discussing the Srebrenica massacre and his experience as a forensic technician during the conflict. The museum is also a great way to introduce religion to children in an interactive way, and learn a little more about other cultures and faiths.

What's nearby?

As the museum is close to town, you are spoilt for choice of food and drink options nearby.
Popular Italian restaurant Celentano's, as well as the Clock Tower cafe are both located just up the road, with more affordable options of Tim Horton's or Joanna Goodbite on George St.
